Tora meets a pretty woman Fumi, while on a peddling junket to a small island in the Inland Sea. Tora is magnetized by Fumi even though knowing little or nothing about her. Tora encounters Fumi again in Osaka. Then, he comes to know that Fumi makes her living as a geisha. Tora sends a postcard to Toraya in Shibamata to have his family know that he is having a good time with Fumi in Osaka. Fumi tells Tora she has a brother whom she has not seen since they were in childhood. Tora urges her to look for him. But to Fumi’s dismay, they discover that his brother died of heart trouble only a few days before they approached. That night, Fumi drinks after a session with carousing guests and goes to visit Tora at the cheap hotel he stays. After lamenting her brother’s death, she falls asleep with leaning on Tora’s lap. He gently covers her with a blanket and silently leaves the room.
